What is a Dental Crown – And Do I Need One?

When King Henry IV says, “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” in Shakespeare’s play of the same name, Hal didn’t have a dental crown in mind.

It wasn’t just because dental crowns hadn’t been invented yet, or that he was talking about the crown of a king. We know this about dental crowns: they’re there to make sure that your head can rest easy, that dental pain is no more, and your bite doesn’t suffer from being slightly out of kilter.

We know that the causes and procedures leading up to needing a crown aren’t always pleasant and that it wasn’t in your list of ideas for having a good time, but sometimes they are needed. At Cooper, Wisner, and Fergus, we want to get you back on track as quickly as possible. Make an appointment today and we’ll surprise you with how natural your new crown feels.

What Is A Crown?

A crown is something like a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a tooth after it’s been reshaped after having been repaired or after a root canal.

Those aren’t the only reasons for a crown, but most folks who have them fit into one of those categories.

What usually happens is this: the area around the nerve in your tooth is exposed. Maybe you bit down on something hard and broke the tooth, or maybe you weren’t aware a filling fell out and time and decay made that area of the tooth open up past the point of no return. That area of the tooth, where there are nerve ending

s and blood circulation, is compromised which is almost always a painful experience. That calls for a root canal. An endodontist will perform this dental procedure, and, at some point, the tooth takes a different shape than it had before the work was done. This can affect your bite, so what we do is to take a mold of the area and create a tooth-like cap that goes on top of the told tooth. It works just like your original did. You can chew with it, brush it, and even floss! The best part is, you’ll hardly notice the difference which also means that no one else will notice!
